What is Pannam Imaging’s PTC SafeHeat™ Heating Technology?

While traditional heating technologies generate warmth using wires or coils that create uneven heating patterns and need to be regulated using thermostat units, Pannam’s SafeHeat™ heaters are composed of flexible, printed Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) materials that heat evenly across the entire surface and self-regulate to their designed temperature without the need for external diagnostics or controls. In addition to providing a more uniform heat to the heating surface, their self-regulation allows them to run open-loop without external controls, which results in fewer field problems, greater safety, and lower power requirements.

How is PTC SafeHeat™ different from traditional heating technologies?

PTC SafeHeat™ heaters are flexible, printed, self-regulating heaters. Traditional fixed-resistance wire heaters utilize wires or coils to generate heat. PTC SafeHeat™ heaters utilize Positive Temperature Coefficient materials that exhibit a positive resistance change with an increase in temperature. When power is applied, the resistance increases and limits the electrical current to the heater. The heater self-regulates to its designed temperature, without the use of diagnostics, thermostats, or control units.

OK, I get the idea of a “self-regulating” heater. How does it benefit my product?

Self-regulating heaters eliminate problems with overheating and improve the safety of your product. These heaters can run open-loop, without the need for complicated electronic control units or thermostats. Your product is inherently safer, as any failure will “fail to cold”, independent of the failure mode. Because they self-regulate, field problems and warranty issues are reduced. These heaters provide more uniform heat with no hot spots, and require less power to operate than traditional heating technologies.

Can PTC Safe heaters be designed for different voltage levels? Can a controller be used?

PTC SafeHeat™ heaters can be designed to run at 5V – 120V. A controller can be used to achieve different heat settings. Additionally, the heaters can be powered using a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Technique. A variable duty cycle can be utilized to achieve multiple heat output settings.

What kind of termination method can you provide?

Typically, a PTC SafeHeat™ heater is supplied with a .110” quick connect that is dual riveted to the circuit, and then the circuit is completely sealed from the opposite side. Any wire with a mating connector can be assembled to the heater.

What happens if a PTC SafeHeat™ heater is pierced, cut, or folded over?

PTC SafeHeat™ heaters run cooler than comparable wire heaters and are minimally affected by fold-overs, piercing, etc. A fold-over in a traditional wire heater can cause excessive and potentially dangerous temperature spikes.

What’s the largest size heater Pannam Imaging can produce?

The largest size for a single PTC SafeHeat™ heater is approximately 22” x 28”. If you need a larger surface area to be heated, the heaters can be daisy-chained in parallel.

I’d like to discuss my project with Pannam. What information do you need from me to start a dialog?

When you describe your heater specifications, it is helpful to include the following information:

  • A CAD file of the overall part size showing any special holes or cutouts
  • A brief description of the product application and the environment in which it will operate
  • The maximum temperature you are trying to achieve
  • The maximum current draw for the heater
  • Anticipated production volumes
  • Any other special requirements such as multiple heating zones, time-to-temperature, de-icing requirements, the need for a mounting adhesive, termination requirements, etc.
