Fiber Optic Backlighting

There are several technologies available for adding light to your membrane switch assembly:

  1. Popular as indicator lights, LEDs (light-emitting-diode) are very efficient and radiate very little heat.
    • Single or bi-color
    • Blue & white available
    • Used under polyester graphic or rubber keypads
  1. An optical fiber is a glass or plastic fiber that carries light along its length. Fiber Optic panels are most commonly used where uniform lighting is required in larger areas.
    • Pliable panel
    • Powered by LEDs
    • Long life
    • Replaceable
    • Used under polyester graphic or rubber keypads
  1. Electroluminescence (EL) is the phenomenon that occurs when a material emits light when exposed to an electric current, or strong electric field. EL is an alternative to fiber optic backlighting.
    • Pliable panel
    • Brighter light source
    • Will not inhibit actuation force
    • Used under polyester graphic or rubber keypads
    • Greater design flexibility
    • Tooling required
